Becca Katz

Co-Founder, Executive Director, & Instigator of Awesomeness

Becca has taught in classrooms both walled and wild, from strip malls to the Arctic and Andes. During more than 300 days leading wilderness expeditions, she witnessed the transformative power of nature and the empathy humans develop for the natural world, sparking her obsession with human-nature connections. She wondered: ‘How can we help nearly 8 billion people on the planet form emotional – HEART – connections with nature without everyone going on a multi-day expedition? The answer came when she found research showing these connections can be built through routine "backyard" experiences. This led her to co-found Good Natured Learning, empowering teachers to bring nature into their routine teaching practices.

In addition to leading Good Natured Learning, Becca writes Learning, by Nature. Her work has appeared in Chalkbeat, Edutopia, High Country News, Stanford Magazine, and Women’s Adventure Magazine. She previously co-facilitated a diverse community group to secure a $3 million grant for Get Outdoors Leadville! to connect marginalized youth to nature and developed a PK-12 nature-based curriculum for a rural Title 1 district in Colorado, contributing to the community’s Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Culture of Health Award. She holds a B.A. in History and M.S. in Earth Systems from Stanford University.

Outside of work, Becca loves biking, camping, jogging, cooking, spending time (especially outdoors!) with friends, her hilarious husband Eric, sweet dog Arty, and two spunky daughters, Clara and Nora.
